Much of the data exchange in agri-food chains is done today in standardized ways on computer networks using electronic business-to-business data exchange interfaces (EDIs). There are two main issues involved. First, the development of cost effective and reliable data transmission links (wired or wireless) between organizations (the ‘hardware’). In principle, this can be done by using private data exchange networks or public ones. During the last decade it has become increasingly common for most of the data exchange to occur through public cable networks such as the internet.

Yet the decline of specialized food retailing and the rise of global supermarkets also pose problems.
